Attendance

Absenteeism and Tardiness
Consistent with its objectives and philosophy, the Wake County Board of Education demands prompt and regular attendance in all classes as an integral part of a student’s performance in school. Parent/guardian contacts will be made in the case of all student absences.

Any student who fails to attend 165 days of school as defined in the regulations for this policy, within any academic year, will be subject to an administrative review by he principal or his designee. The administrative review will be conducted before the student can be considered for course credit or promotion regardless of grades.

Students who “drop”, skip, or otherwise fail to attend ALL scheduled classes regularly are subject to imeediate suspension from school for up to 10 days for each offense. Students who are absent from a class, either excused or unexcused, more than 10 days per term will not receive credit regardless of their earned grades and will receive maximum grades of 60 (FF).

Students who have been absent from school or any class must bring a note from their parent explaining their absence. Notes are due upon the student’s return to school. Absences for which notes have not been submitted within 2 days of the student’s return to school will be permanently classified as unexcused.

7 reasons for which absences may be excused:

  • 1. illness
  • 2. quarantine
  • 3. death in family
  • 4. medical or dental appointments
  • 5. court subpoena
  • 6. religious observance
  • 7. educational opportunity

Reasons #4,#6,#7 require approval in advance. Form 1710 must be completed and submitted in advance to apply for approval of an excused absence for educational opportunities. Students are entitled and expected to make up work missed due to absences. Credit for make up work following an unexcused absence will be determined by the teacher. School work will be made up for excused absences under the following conditions:

a. If the absence is approved in advance an/or if the work is assigned by the teacher in advance, all make-up work, including tests assigned for the da or return, is due upon the student’s return to school.

b. If the make-up work h as not been assigned in advance, for absences of 1 to 3 days, the student will have 1 day for each day absent to make up the work. For absences exceeding 3 days, the student may have 2 days for each day absent to make up work.
